Renowned South African gospel artist Hlengiwe Mhlaba is set to celebrate two decades in the music industry with a special live recording titled “20 Years of Grace” on March 22, 2025, at The Playhouse in Durban.

Born in 1973 in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, Hlengiwe Mhlaba started as a schoolteacher before her musical gift was discovered by gospel icon Sipho Makhabane. Her debut album, Dwala Lami (2005), introduced her powerful voice to the world, followed by a string of hits like Sewakhile and Rock of Ages, which have become timeless anthems in churches, funerals, and worship gatherings across the country. Over the years, her music has inspired countless worshippers, with younger gospel artists reimagining and rearranging her songs, proving their lasting impact.
For Mhlaba, gospel music has never been about entertainment but a divine calling. “I didn’t come into the industry to be a performer; I came as a minister for other worshippers,” she says. “When I sing, I don’t do it for applause—I sing for people to be healed and to connect with God.”

Her influence has reached beyond churches and gospel circles, earning her the honour of performing at some of the most significant moments in South African history. In 2013, she sang at the state memorial service of Nelson Mandela at FNB Stadium, in front of world leaders and dignitaries. She was also invited to perform at MegaFest in 2007, hosted by Bishop T.D. Jakes, a surreal moment that allowed her to meet some of the most respected figures in global ministry.
Over the past two decades, Hlengiwe Mhlaba’s contribution to gospel music has been recognised with numerous prestigious awards. She is a multiple South African Music Awards (SAMA) winner, a recipient of the highly respected Crown Gospel Music Awards, and has been honoured with many other accolades celebrating her impact on gospel music. Her music has consistently topped gospel charts, and her albums have sold in record numbers, making her one of the most successful gospel artists in South Africa.

The upcoming live recording, “20 Years of Grace,” is a deeply personal celebration of the journey God has carried her through. “If I look back at where I started and where I am now, I know it can only be grace,” she reflects. “Grace is not something you earn—it is something God gives freely. So, for me, this recording is a thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness over the past 20 years.”
This night of worship will be more than a celebration—it will be a moment of reconciliation. Mhlaba confirms that there will be a special surprise performance featuring an artist she has since reconciled with, acknowledging that, like any journey, there have been both meaningful friendships and difficult fallouts along the way.

Looking back, Mhlaba believes that the key to longevity in gospel music is building relationships, not just chasing money. “Relationships can take you further than money ever could. I’ve learned to be there for others in the industry, to collaborate, and to support upcoming artists—even when that means letting them shine brighter than me. Jealousy has no place in ministry,” she says.
Her dedication to gospel music was also tested during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that left many artists struggling. But for Mhlaba, it was a time of spiritual refilling. “You can’t keep pouring out to people and never refill yourself. COVID-19 gave me time to read, listen to sermons, and strengthen my faith. Through it all, I never doubted that God would provide—He has never failed me, and He never will.”

Fans can expect a powerful night filled with worship, nostalgia, and new music. Mhlaba’s classics, which have become Sunday morning staples for worship teams nationwide, will take centre stage, alongside brand-new songs that continue her legacy. While she remains tight-lipped about the guest collaborations and surprises, she assures fans that it will be a night to remember.
